Building Burn Care Excellence Across Sarawak

The Sarawak Emergency Burn Course (SEBC) has been making its mark across the state, bringing vital skills in emergency burn management closer to healthcare teams on the ground. With burns often being life-threatening and time-sensitive, SEBC equips frontline doctors and nurses with the confidence and expertise to act quickly when every second counts.

A Journey Across Sarawak

In 2024, SEBC was rolled out in three major hospitals: Hospital Umum Sarawak, Hospital Bintulu, and Hospital Sibu. Each venue saw enthusiastic participation from healthcare providers eager to sharpen their skills and learn practical approaches to managing burn patients.

The momentum carried into 2025, with the course expanding further to Hospital Umum Sarawak, Hospital Sri Aman, and Hospital Miri. The inclusion of hospitals in different regions highlights SEBC’s mission to make emergency burn education widely accessible—not just in urban centers, but also in smaller districts where resources may be more limited.

Learning by Doing

The program was designed to be both informative and hands-on.

  • Morning sessions were packed with engaging lectures on emergency burn assessment, fluid resuscitation, dressing techniques, and surgical interventions such as escharotomy.

  • Afternoon sessions gave participants the chance to put theory into practice with hands-on stations. From calculating fluid requirements and assessing Total Body Surface Area (TBSA), to practicing dressing applications and escharotomy techniques on models, participants walked away with tangible skills they could bring back to their wards.

Strengthening Skills, Saving Lives

The impact of SEBC goes beyond lectures and workshops. It builds networks of skilled, confident professionals who are ready to respond to burn emergencies in their communities. By rotating between different hospitals each year, SEBC ensures that knowledge is shared widely and consistently across Sarawak, creating a stronger, safer healthcare system for everyone.

With its growing reach and continued success, the Sarawak Emergency Burn Course is set to remain a cornerstone of emergency care training in the region—helping healthcare teams turn knowledge into lifesaving action.
